ABOUT Us
The Thando Wines Story

Thando Wines was established in 2014, born out of a deep curiosity, cultural grounding, and a clear vision to create a South African wine brand that honours both .craft and character. FOUNDED and ESTABLISHED by Thando Masango, the journey began not with production, but with research, learning, and patience — understanding that wine is not rushed, and neither is legacy.

The year 2014 marked the conceptual birth of Thando Wines. During this period, Thando immersed himself in understanding the wine industry — from viticulture and winemaking practices to supply chains, branding, and market access. Several wine estates and production partners were identified and evaluated.
Thando Wines secured a strategic production partnership with a reputable Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. This partnership laid the foundation for Thando Wines’ first expression: Wine Blends which would later become the brand’s signature identity.

In 2015, Thando Wines entered production for the first time, releasing two carefully crafted blends:
Red Blend
61% Shiraz | 12% Petit Verdot | 10% Cabernet Sauvignon | 8% Merlot | 3% Grenache | 2% Cabernet Franc
White Blend
59% Chardonnay | 29% Viognier | 12% Chenin Blanc
These wines positioned Thando Wines as a brand that specialises in blending, rather than following single-varietal trends. The Red Blend, in particular, received strong positive feedback and quickly became the flagship wine.

For the first two years, Thando Wines focused exclusively on the Red and White Blends. This period was about learning the market, building relationships, and refining the brand’s voice. The consistent reception of the Red Blend confirmed that Thando Wines had found its lane — crafting expressive, well-balanced blends for everyday enjoyment.

In response to growing customer demand, 2017 saw the introduction of two new wines:
Merlot– a single varietal offering structure, softness, and approachability
Sweet Rosè– created for customers seeking a sweeter, refreshing style
This expansion marked Thando Wines’ first step beyond blends, while still maintaining balance within the portfolio.

During 2018 and 2019, Thando Wines maintained its full range — the original blends alongside the Merlot and Sweet Rosé. These years focused on consistency, brand visibility, and steady growth across events, hospitality, and direct sales
The challenges of 2020 reshaped the alcohol industry. When restrictions eased to Level 2, Thando Wines adapted by producing and launching Sweet Shiraz— a wine positioned within the mid-lifestyle segment, offering accessibility, flavour, and strong consumer appeal.
The Sweet Shiraz quickly became a key pillar of the brand and reinforced Thando Wines’ ability to evolve with the market.
The financial impact of COVID-19 made it impossible to produce the original Red and White Blends at full scale. Instead of stepping back, Thando Wines leaned into its identity and released Limited Edition Blends in 2022:
Limited Edition Red Blend
50% Pinotage | 50% Merlot
Limited Edition White Blend
76% Chardonnay | 24% Sauvignon Blanc
These wines were created to reassure customers that, even in difficult times, Thando Wines remained committed to blending as its signature.
Between 2022 and 2024, Thando Wines focused on selling the Limited Edition Blends while carefully testing market response. Strong feedback and consistent demand confirmed that the blends still held relevance and emotional connection with customers.
In 2025, Thando Wines entered a new chapter. The focus shifted to relaunching the mid-lifestyle range, led by:
* Sweet Shiraz
* Merlot
* With the potential reintroduction of Sweet Rosé
At the same time, work began behind the scenes to prepare for the return of the original Red and White Blends, planned for relaunch from late 2025 into mid-2026.
